Calling all lunatics! The moon will be full on Monday. Let’s sing for it.
You can do this any way you please. Use the surface of the moon as a visual score. Sing an epic tale of the survival of humankind after the destruction of the moon. Go outside and howl at the moon, if you must.
Or you could follow one of the approaches in the options below. The first asks you to start with a moon-based popular song; the second takes a Buddhist holiday as inspiration.
Use ’em if you want. The essential thing is to sing. So sing!
Option A: Recall a moon song. For an inert body of rock and dust, the moon has had more than its share of airtime in popular song. Moon River. Fly Me to the Moon. Paper Moon. Blue Moon. Moondance. Walking on the Moon. Pink Moon. Bad Moon Rising. Harvest Moon. Man on the Moon. That’s Amore (When the Moon Hits Your Eye). An on and on! Take the most familiar of these songs and, without listening to it or consulting the lyrics, try to conjure it on the spot. Start singing and see where it takes you — perhaps off into the lunosphere?
Option B: Happy Vesak!
On Monday, people who observe the Buddhist tradition will celebrate a holiday called Vesak, or Day of the Full Moon. According to the U.N., “it was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago…that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.” If this means something to you, you could make up a song about birth, death, and, perhaps, all that jazz in between.
The steps are as follows:
- Step 1: Record yourself singing.
- Step 2: Upload to SoundCloud and post the track to the SSS group.
- Step 3: Listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow singers. (Play nice!)
